Distance tracking w/ Pixy

How accurate can width/height be tracked on something such as a ping-pong ball? From width/height can a distance be calculated?

I am looking at tracking the distance of objects so the pixy and a custom mount can move to dodge/catch objects quickly but it is likely that some objects will be coming from a few feet away and will be about the size of a ping pong ball. Is this feasible?

Thanks! Cannot wait to get my Pixy in!

Hi Corey,

It all depends on a few factors - how bright the object is, how large the object is, the lighting, etc. Brighter objects with good lighting works best. but you can adjust for poor conditions by changing some camera settings, like auto white balance and digital shutter time.

I can tell you that it is definitely possible, but I can’t say exactly at what distance you’d be able to track something like a ping pong ball (a few feet should be easily feasible). You could probably calculate a rough estimate of distance using the size of the ball and the resolution of the camera.

For the highest accuracy I’d suggest taking a couple measurements of the distance between the ball and camera, and the size of the ball in pixels, then extrapolating in between.

Hope this helps.
