Filtering for IR laser

I have an IR laser pointer that I want to point at the ceiling and use for indoor “celestial” navigation. The camera on the Pixy sees the light (but human eye does not). It does not see any color though.

Can someone point me to the right area to look to filter for this light? Is there a hardware lens filter I can add or a software change to focus on a specific light spectrum?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,

The camera lens is a standard M12, so you should be able to easily find one. A quick Google search brings up some “promising results”:http://www.edmundoptics.com/imaging/imaging-lenses/micro-video-lenses/infinite-conjugate-micro-video-imaging-lenses/2196.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply; will those lenses show the IR as one of the seven colors the Pixy will recognize?

I haven’t used an IR filter on Pixy yet, so I’m not sure what it will show up as. Others have indicated that IR light shows up as white, with everything else being black, so you may have to plan for that. You could try training Pixy on white (although I’m not sure how it will perform) and doing the tracking that way.

Thanks, I will get some lenses and give it a try.

Hi Scott,

I like the website that you suggested; however, they are for the 1/3" sensors. Shouldn’t we be using lenses made for the 1/4" sensor format?

Thanks,
Thomas
