Hi David,
We do not have any official libraries to work with PICAXE, although you can easily write your own (or use a 3rd party one) using the documentation in the wiki.
Its hard for me to say if it is difficult to program since I don’t know your student’s skill level. You can easily interface Pixy with an Arduino, which are very easy to program. This forum is also here to help you for whenever you or your student gets stuck.
If you’re talking about programming with Pixy’s firmware, then that may be a bit more difficult. But again, there are some parts of the code that are easier to work with than others and we’re always here to help.
